Is grazing the way to lose weight?

Ulrika Jonsson famously stays slim by eating little and often. So, we asked The Food Doctor about grazing to lose weight.
In recent months much has been made of grazing to lose weight. The media has picked up on the eating habits of stars like Nicole Kidman and Ulrika, whose Scandinavian diet is high in protein and eaten in small regular portions.
But are their youthful figures down to grazing... or good genes?
Well, according to Ian Marber, The Food Doctor, eating little and often is undoubtedly good for your metabolism, but there is more to it than that. He told us more...
Is grazing good for weight loss?
Food Doctor: Definitely, it is something we have been advocating for years. There is definitely a case to have breakfast, small snack, lunch, small snack and then dinner. But it isn’t enough to only graze on snacks, like nuts and fruit, you need proper meals as well. It keeps your metabolism up.
Doesn’t that mean you’d end up eating too much?
Food Doctor: If you are snacking all through the day you need to have a gauge of what you are eating so you don’t eat too much. You should make sure your main meals aren’t too big and that your snacks are 1/3 of the size of a main meal.
What should you eat?
Food Doctor: You should always eat something with protein and carbohydrate. It is purely about keeping your glucose levels balanced because carbohydrate breaks down quickly and stops you feeling hungry and protein breaks down slowly, so sustains you for longer. Things like fruit and nuts, rye bread and cottage cheese or even a small bowl of cereal are all good snacks.
